When the shadows do inevitably come for me, World of Horror’s achievement system manages to make death still feel like some sort of win. Whether I banish the ancient horrors or not, performing certain actions as I play—helping someone out, poking something I perhaps shouldn’t, even dying in a specific way—can unlock new spells, costumes, items, and more. There’s always some sort of reward waiting just around the corner, even when a run ends early because I’ve succumbed to madness on another plane of existence. No matter what I do the game just keeps getting more varied, more interesting. I’m never put in a position where a mystery I’ve played through before comes up and the only difference is I pick Option B instead of Option A.
Being as much of an insufferable, online-but-ultimately-in-quite-a-basic-way person as I am, I’m a Junji Ito girlie. The horror manga artist has an immediately recognisable style that intersects detailed, line heavy art with strange and upsetting concepts, and some of his short stories have acquired a sort of semi-memetic status (“This is my hole! Combat in World of Horror is no-frills action. Encounters play out in a turn-based fashion where the actions you choose will be queued up and executed based on the amount of action points you have. For example: my character is equipped with a baseball bat and I enter a combat encounter with a horrifying creature. I select “normal hit, “attack boost” and finally “strong hit, which uses up the last of my action points. Hitting “execute” causes all of my actions to play out and allows the monster to respond before I can issue more commands. This is also where the random RNG and calculator comes into play as the game will decide when your attacks or spells hit and when they don’t; same goes for every single foe you’ll be fighting.
I have purposely avoided actively following guides because this game is all about choices, but it seems like there is so little information given to you on any given run that this game expects you to be constantly be taking IRL notes or getting information from OUTSIDE the game to know what decision to make in any particular scenario. I’m not making forward progress, and it feels like unless I just have someone hold my hand to make exactly the right decision at every step, I’m never going to learn this game’s story.
It sounds overwhelming but within the clear objectve of ‘solve five cases and save the world’ it’s actually incredibly freeing. Each new start is like another step in opening an elegant puzzle box, and the objective becomes not saving the world in an individual run, but finding everything you can in World Of Horror itself.
